Documents necessary to move to Portugal:
The effect of Brexit when moving from the UK to Portugal is the need to prepare the documentation required by customs authorities, which allows you to obtain the Transfer of Residence status. Thanks to this, we will be able to count on exemption from import VAT (23% of the total value) for property transferred to Portugal. As the Ban Trans team, we strive to make the entire moving process easier for you and for this purpose you will need to prepare the following documents:
• Copy of ID card or passport;
• Confirmation of address 'Atestado de Residência', which is an official document issued by the local Portuguese Junta de Freguesia, certifying your intention to reside at a given address, or if an EU customs agent agrees, then you only need to present a document confirming that you are or intend to become an EU resident;
• A detailed bill of lading with the value, size and weight of each item listed;
• British residence certificate or other evidence that you have lived in the UK for at least the last 12 months (e.g. 12 months of council tax bills or bank statements showing your address);
• A declaration to the customs authorities that you have used the household items at your usual place of residence in the UK for more than six months and that you will not sell, rent or pawn them once you receive them in your new place, and that you intend to remain an EU resident for at least one year.
• Baggage certificate issued by the Portuguese Consulate in the UK
• Signed authorization for the customs clearance agent to act on your behalf.
Print and sign all required documents and have them ready for the driver before collecting your property and, for safety, also send them electronically.
Another important document is the CMR form, which our driver will provide you to complete on the day of the move.
To speed up this process, you can contact your local customs office in Portugal.
You can find out more information about bringing personal items into Portugal directly from the government websites.
